On March 22, 2026, the Russian army attacked a passenger train locomotive on the Prydniprovska railway. While trying to bring passengers to safety, an unspeakable tragedy occurred: a young train attendant succumbed to fatal injuries after being struck by an oncoming train amid the chaos of evacuation.

Evacuations under drone threats have become a daily reality in Ukraine, saving thousands of lives while simultaneously posing mortal danger. Even the smallest moment of inattention or a fatal mistake in wartime conditions can lead to catastrophe. This latest case from the Odesa railway has shaken the public: a young employee lost her life under the wheels of a train that was also stopping with the same purpose – to protect passengers from an aerial attack. One passenger was also injured in the incident, sustaining moderately suffering moderate injuries.

Oleksandr Percovskyi, Chairman of the Board of Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia), confirmed the victim’s identity with deep sorrow. It was Ilona Vovk, a 19-year-old girl who had just completed professional training in Germany. Ilona proudly and enthusiastically began her first independent assignments.

“This young girl was just stepping onto her professional path. She dreamed of a career on the railway and was immensely proud to have been selected for an internship abroad. Her dedication, energy, and sincere love for her work were an example to all her colleagues,” Percovskyi emphasized.

When the immediate threat of Russian drones forced the train to stop mid-route, Ilona did not hesitate. Devoted to her profession, she helped frightened passengers evacuate to safety. However, war is unpredictable—while trying to protect others, she was struck by a train coming from the opposite direction. Despite rapid intervention, her injuries were too severe; the young attendant could not be saved.

“They say traffic rules are written in blood. Sadly, in Ukraine today, wartime railway rules are written with the names, smiles, and dreams of our youth, whom we are losing forever. It is a terrible, immeasurably painful price we pay so that the heart of our country continues to beat and trains do not stop.”

As Ukraine bids farewell to a young heroine, an official investigation into the details of the accident is still ongoing. Ilona’s story remains a painful reminder of the inhumane conditions in which these quiet heroes risk everything every day under constant threat from the sky.
