Aleksandr Lukashenko

**Alexander Lukashenko** (born 30 August 1954) has ruled Belarus since 1994, making him one of Europe’s longest-serving leaders. Over the course of nearly three decades in power, his governance has been widely characterized by authoritarian control, suppression of political opposition, and restrictions on independent media.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Lukashenko positioned himself as an anti-corruption reformer. However, his presidency gradually consolidated power around the executive branch, weakened parliamentary influence, and curtailed judicial independence. International observers and human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized elections held under his administration as neither free nor fair.

The political crisis following the 2020 presidential election marked a turning point. Mass protests erupted across the country, and security forces responded with widespread detentions, allegations of torture, and the forced exile or imprisonment of opposition figures. Independent civil society groups and media outlets were dismantled or driven underground.

In response to these developments, the European Union and the United States imposed multiple rounds of sanctions against Lukashenko’s government, citing human rights abuses and democratic backsliding.

Supporters credit Lukashenko with maintaining state stability and close economic ties with Russia, but critics argue that his prolonged rule has isolated Belarus internationally and entrenched a repressive political system often described as a personalist dictatorship.
